The Story

Modern fishing lures had their beginnings in many ancient counterparts. The present-day trolling spoon and feathered jig lure are patterned after the early Polynesian trolling lures. The modern cod jig is a direct descendent of wood, bone and metal jigs used by ancient Norsemen, and, it was early bass fishermen who discovered that lavish color contributed to a successful lure. Hundreds of patents have been granted for fishing lures. Names such as spoons, spinners, jigs, poppers, plugs, flies and divers characterize the variety of designs. Some are revolutionary, some entertaining, and others are… absolutely ridiculous!

Here’s a tribute to those creative anglers of the past who utilized ingenuity for survival, and to the inventors and pioneers such as Charles Pflueger, Carl Gaide and others whose names are synonymous with the truly colorful history of fishing with lures.
